In the world of synthetic biology, scientists are reprogramming life itself.

In the context of biology, the standard genetic code uses 20 amino acids to build proteins.

Now, scientists have been able to develop genomically recoded organisms (GROs) that can use an expanded set of building blocks (nonstandard amino acids) to create proteins.

These GROs have the potential to revolutionize medicine, producing safer therapeutics and tackling diseases like cancer, autoimmune disorders, and metabolic conditions. This also opens the door to creating novel materials, better biofuels, and environmentally-friendly chemicals, and much more.
