Researchers have achieved a breakthrough by using live cells to create a "living digital camera" that encodes and stores images directly within DNA.

The team developed a system called "BacCam" that uses biological components to emulate a digital camera's functions. They employed optogenetics, a technique that controls cell activity with light, to imprint light signals onto DNA, and then used barcoding and machine-learning algorithms to organize and reconstruct the stored images.

This innovative approach could revolutionize DNA data storage and pave the way for further integration of biological and digital systems.
