Scientists have discovered that plants use a strange quantum state of matter called a Bose-Einstein condensate during photosynthesis, which helps them efficiently convert sunlight into energy.

Normally, these condensates are found at extremely low temperatures, but the researchers found them in leaves at room temperature. During photosynthesis, light excites an electron in a pigment called chlorophyll, creating an electron-hole pair known as an exciton. These excitons behave like a single particle in a condensate, allowing energy to flow freely and aiding the creation of sugars for the plant.

This discovery could have practical applications for quantum research and energy efficiency.
