Scientists have been able to create “cyborg cells” by implanting an artificial hydrogel scaffold into bacteria.

Instead of using genetically modified bacteria, or creating synthetic cells from scratch, this hybrid approach has several advantages.

Cyborg cells could one day function as tiny robots in medicine, environmental cleanups and industrial production, opening up for many applications, e.g. deliver vaccines or act as tiny terminators for cancer cells.
