Engineers have developed soft fibers that can be implanted in the body to deliver pulses of light to nerves and offer pain-relief.

This approach can also be used to study how our muscles work, how we feel sensations on our skin, and how we process pain. And the possibilities go beyond nerve cells - the soft fibers can be adjusted for use in other moving parts of our body like the heart, stomach, and blood vessels.
